How do you consume music?
I listen to most of my music through my iPod which I constantly update with all new releases and new albums from my favourite artists. I also listen to music on music channels in the morning when I'm getting ready for school, or when I'm doing homework. I usually hear new music when I'm out clubbing or in my boyfriends car.
When? Do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?
Without fail, I will always listen to music on public transport. In the mornings, I will listen to a variety of music on the bus on the way to school, this can be pop/indie/r'n'b, but will never be drum and bass because that's too bassy for the morning when I have just woken up. Plus the bassy music can be too loud through my earphones and I don't particuarly want to disturb other people on the bus with my loud music.
When I'm getting ready to go out clubbing with my friends, I will listen to club/dance music to get me into the mood. This music is usually up-beat and fast and not slow because it makes me excited and energised ready to go out.
If I'm in the car with my boyfriend, he will usually play house music because that's the genre of music he likes to play.
At night, I always listen to my iPod to help me sleep better, I usually listen to dance music and often create new dance routines in my head because I used to be a dancer.
Where?
At home is where I consume most of my music through music channels, my iPod, YouTube and my through talking to my friends on the internet.
Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual experience?
I usually share the music I know my friends will like. However, I do listen to music that my friends don't like so I won't share that with them, but I often post lyrics on social networking sites.
How?
I listen to most music on the TV or on the computer because I like to watch the music videos and often the music channels show the music charts so I can keep up to date with new releases.
Why? What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?
I listen to music mostly as an escape. It allows me to leave me situation and think about life in the song and how it would be to live like how the lyrics say. If I'm feeling sad, I'll listen to ballads as they ironically make me feel better about everything as I can relate to the lyrics and it makes it feel as if the song is a way of expressing my mood healthily rather than badly by shouting or being upset. If I'm happy, I'll listen to upbeat songs as they match my mood and I enjoy the song even more. I think music in general offers a method of escapism to it's audience as there are so many different genres and song topics that people can relate to, which is why it's such a popular industry. It's very difficult to not find someone who doesn't post a song lyric on a social networking site and I think this shows that person connecting with the song and the artist and allowing themselves to escape into a song and express themselves fully in more that just speaking words.
